Asheville, NC sits in a bowl of the Blue Ridge Mountains, at an elevation of about 2100 feet, surrounded by mountains that peak at about 7000 feet. It is an area rich with Cherokee history, important development from the 1800s and a downtown proud of art deco architecture mixed today with a fusion of contemporary and rock ‘n roll.
Downtown Asheville is a very special place. Some have called her the “Paris of the South” referring to sidewalk cafes, music in abundance, performance artists, art and crafts.
Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains have a romantic, sleepy ambience and many people that come through to visit are completely enticed to go home, pack up and move here. There is some basis to the “pull” of these mountain ranges – some of the oldest in the world – a story of a convergence of energy that draws people here.
In the book, “The Spiritual Reawakening of The Great Smoky Mountains” by Page Bryant , she states that the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains are magnetic in their charge of life force
because of their particular geology and the powerful influence of the Atlantic Ocean. “The Great Smoky Mountains are the Elders…the Ancient Ones…whose voices have sung the Song of Creation on the North American continent longer than the voices of any other mountain range on Earth. They hold memories that make them magnetic and powerful and they are especially conducive to the energies necessary to assist spiritual seekers with their vision quests and search for spirituality, more so than any other mountains in the world at this time.”
Indeed, most people that live in Asheville feel their lives are enhanced by synchronicities and the citizens of Asheville are known to be generous, friendly, and accepting of many different lifestyles. The diversity of the city refers not only to the many styles of music, art, and food, but to a diversity of people. I always tell friends that there is at least one of everything God ever created in Asheville.
Our city is struggling, as so many precious places are that have been discovered – a fight between growth, commerce and preservation, but today, we are still in a good balance, more or less, and we are blessed with many, many devoted folks who wage a good fight to keep us special – people here care – and in Asheville your actions can still make a difference.
This blog is about downtown Asheville – one of our favorite places, and Steve and I are very blessed to live here. We’re going to take you to some of our favorite places and introduce you to some fun, talented people.
